I’m delighted to share that I will give a talk titled “Recovering Hidden Histories: Reconstructing trajectories and experiences of racialised and enslaved individuals in colonial Paraguay” at the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) Seminar, University of Manchester, this Wednesday, October 7th, from 17:00 to 19:00 (UK time). Drawing on our HAVI Schmidt Sciences project, I will cross-read Paraguay’s national and religious archives to follow enslaved African, Afro-Paraguayan, and Indigenous people from the 1540s to the first decade of the Republic of Paraguay, and argue that African men and women stand at the origin of mestizaje in Paraguay. I will close with what happened when these histories returned to Indigenous women leaders in Asunción this July. The seminar is hybrid: in room A202 of the Samuel Alexander Building, or online via this link.
